In what has been described as a landmark moment in the history of Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was on Saturday, May 31st, 2025, honoured with the commissioning of the newly completed central administrative block named after him—Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori “White House” Administrative Block—during the institution’s second combined convocation ceremony.

The imposing edifice, which now stands as the heartbeat of the Polytechnic’s administrative activities, was constructed through internally generated revenue (IGR) and dedicated to the Governor in appreciation of his unwavering support for the institution’s development. Representing the Governor at the event, the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, described the structure as “a testament to what visionary leadership and academic autonomy can achieve.”
“This building is not just bricks and mortar,” Prof. Tonukari said. “It is a bold reflection of the MORE Agenda of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, which emphasizes sustainable development through education. We are proud to commission this administrative block in his honour, and we commend the Polytechnic for channeling its IGR towards projects of this magnitude.”

Visibly moved by the gesture, the Rector, Prof. Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri, declared, “We named this building the Oborevwori White House not just for symbolism, but as an expression of gratitude. Your Excellency, your support, autonomy and faith in our leadership have made this possible. This is your house—a beacon of good governance and education-driven progress.”
The White House commissioning took center stage in the weeklong celebration that culminated in the graduation of students from the 2014 to 2024 academic sessions. Other commissioned projects included the Chief James Onanefe Ibori Auditorium, the Polytechnic's water production factory, and the groundbreaking of a 40-seat office complex for the School of Applied Science.
Addressing the audience, Prof. Ufuophu-Biri highlighted the institution’s strides under his leadership. “Since assuming office, we have secured full five-year accreditation for 30 programmes, gained approval for 23 new high-demand disciplines including HND in Artificial Intelligence, and inaugurated our first ever Alumni Association. We are not just building structures—we are building a legacy.”

He also announced the invention of a fuel-less generator by the Polytechnic’s engineering team, describing it as “a revolutionary step in green technology and energy innovation in Nigeria.” The invention was on display at the event and attracted commendation from stakeholders across academia and government.

Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Andrew Orugbo, lauded the achievements of the institution but appealed to the state government to fast-track the award of the N200 million perimeter fence project. “Without adequate fencing, security and aesthetics are compromised,” he said. “We thank the Governor for the budgetary provision but urge action before the vote lapses.”

The event was graced by notable dignitaries including His Royal Majesty, Noble Oyibo Eshemitan Orefe III of Oghara Kingdom; HRM King Obukowho Whiskey of Mosogar; and HRM Dr. Matthew Egbi, the Okobaro of Jeremi Kingdom. Awards of Distinguished Fellow of Technology were presented to Chief John Nani, Chief John Oguma, and others.

Also in attendance were Vice Chancellors of sister institutions including Prof. Augustine Ikelegbe (Western Delta University) and Prof. Stella Chiemeke (University of Delta, Agbor), as well as state legislators, members of the House Committee on Education, traditional rulers, students, and members of the host community.

As the curtain fell on the convocation, the Rector charged the graduating students to be worthy ambassadors of the Polytechnic. “Go forth with pride, passion and purpose,” he said. “Remember, the world is waiting for your brilliance. Make Delta proud.” Among the star graduands was Okene Efemena, who bagged a distinction with a CGPA of 3.86 from the Department of Science Laboratory Technology.

The commissioning of the Oborevwori White House has not only redefined the architectural skyline of the Polytechnic but has also reinforced the institution’s commitment to excellence, accountability, and partnership with government for the greater good of Delta State.
