As children across Nigeria celebrate this year’s Children’s Day, the Member Representing Sapele Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly and Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Perkins Umukoro, has felicitated with Nigerian children, describing them as the foundation and future of the nation.

In a goodwill message to commemorate the May 27 celebration, Hon. Umukoro reiterated the need for renewed commitment by all stakeholders to safeguard the rights and welfare of children across the country. He stressed that the future of any nation lies in how well it nurtures and protects its younger generation.

“Children represent the true hope of our nation. As we mark Children’s Day, we must reflect deeply on our responsibilities as leaders, parents, and citizens to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to live, learn, and grow in a safe and nurturing environment,” Umukoro stated.

While commending the resilience, brilliance, and creativity of Nigerian children in the face of socio-economic challenges, the lawmaker decried the persistent issues of abuse, exploitation, neglect, and inadequate access to quality education and healthcare. He noted that the annual celebration must go beyond fanfare and serve as a call to action for the protection of children’s rights.

Hon. Umukoro, a known advocate for youth development and quality education, pledged to expand his enrolment scholarship scheme to benefit more pupils and students sitting for their First School Leaving Certificate (Primary 6), Junior Secondary School Certificate (JSS 3), as well as the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) exams.

He noted that the initiative is part of his broader effort to reduce the financial burden on parents and encourage academic excellence among children in Sapele and beyond.

“I believe education is the key to unlocking the potential of every child. As part of my commitment to this cause, I will make scholarship enrolment more accessible to deserving pupils and students across the constituency,” he said.

The lawmaker further called for the full domestication and enforcement of the Child Rights Act in all states of the federation, stressing that no child should be left behind in the pursuit of justice, protection, and opportunity.

He also appealed to governments at all levels, religious bodies, civil society organizations, and the private sector to partner in creating safer, inclusive environments where children can thrive without fear, discrimination, or deprivation.

“Investing in children is not only a moral obligation but a strategic imperative for the peace, growth, and stability of our country. We owe it to our children to protect their dreams and equip them for leadership,” Hon. Umukoro added.
