Delta State Polytechnic Otefe-Oghara is currently hosting its 2nd Combined Convocation ceremony, honoring the academic achievements of its graduates for five vibrant days. The event kicked off on Friday, May 23rd, 2025, with an uplifting Jumat service and a pre-convocation thanksgiving mass held at the James Onanefe Ibori Auditorium on Sunday, 25th 2025, setting a festive tone for the celebrations.
Today, Thursday, May 29th, 2025 the administration hosted a press conference in the School of General Science’s conference room, marking a significant day in the convocation's agenda. The conference served as a platform to unveil the remarkable innovations and technological strides made by faculty and students, with an exhibition taking place in the School of Engineering. The day's festivities culminated in an entertaining evening filled with music and laughter, featuring performances from alumni and comedians, including the institution's very own Rector, Professor Ufuophu-Biri, who kept attendees in stitches with his humor.
As the convocation progresses, anticipation builds for the keynote address scheduled for tomorrow, wherein Professor Chux Gervase Iwu from the University of the Western Cape Town, South Africa, will speak on "Taking Nigeria to The World and the World to Nigeria Through Technology and Innovation Education in the Era of Digitization and Artificial Intelligence." This lecture, slated for the School Auditorium, is expected to shed light on the critical intersection of technology and education in today's rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Adding to the excitement of the event, the Governor of Delta State, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, is expected to visit the polytechnic on Saturday, May 31, to commission several projects. This visit marks the governor's first official engagement with the institution since his election, signifying a strong relationship between the state government and the academic community.
During a recent interview with journalists, Rector Professor Ufuophu-Biri expressed optimism regarding the governor's visit, saying, “His Excellency radiates success, progress, and happiness. We expect all good things." He emphasized the significance of this convocation not just for the institution but for the societal impact it aims to achieve.
Reflecting on his tenure as Rector, Professor Ufuophu-Biri modestly attributed the polytechnic's success to the collective efforts of the institution's staff and students. "I can't assess myself; the assessment of my tenure should be done from outside to make it objective," he said, showcasing his diplomatic approach to leadership.
He said ,the combination of spiritual and academic activities leading up to the convocation is a testament to the institution’s commitment to holistic education. “As godly people, we start with service and thanksgiving, then move on to showcase our innovations and foster community spirit," noted the Rector. This blend of celebration and reflection illustrates the polytechnic's dedication to nurturing a community that values both academic excellence and social connection.
The entertainment segment of today's event was aimed at unifying students, alumni, and the broader community, with performances designed to uplift spirits and celebrate achievements. As Professor Ufuophu-Biri eloquently stated, “Work without play makes Jack a dull boy." This balance of enjoyment and seriousness underscores the importance of camaraderie in the academic environment.
Tomorrow’s schedule promises a solemn atmosphere, focusing on the academic aspects of the convocation as distinguished guests and graduates participate in formal proceedings. The Rector has described this as an opportunity to initiate graduates into the world of intellectualism, adding significance to their long academic journey.
The grand finale on Saturday will see prestigious guests, alumni, and family members gather at the School Auditorium for the main convocation ceremony. This event will not only highlight the achievements of the graduates but also reflect on the polytechnic's journey of innovation and leadership within the educational sector, firmly positioning Delta State Polytechnic Otefe-Oghara as a frontrunner in technical education in Nigeria.
