Sapele Gets Boost in Waste Management as LG Chairman Unveils 10 Waste Bins

Sapele, Delta State – In a bold step towards improving sanitation and waste management in Sapele, the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Okakuro Bright Abeke, has unveiled ten waste bins to be placed at strategic locations within the town. The initiative, according to the chairman, marks the beginning of a comprehensive waste disposal strategy aimed at keeping Sapele clean and healthy.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Clerk of the House, Teacher Happy Overah, lauded the efforts of the local government, noting that for over two decades, Sapele has not witnessed such a proactive approach in combating refuse. He emphasized the importance of cleanliness, stating that a cleaner environment translates to healthier living conditions for residents.

Mr. Overah further commended Hon. Abeke for prioritizing waste management, describing the initiative as a welcome development that will significantly reduce indiscriminate waste disposal in the town. “Health is wealth, and this administration has shown great commitment to ensuring a cleaner and healthier Sapele,” he stated.

While launching the waste bins, Hon. Abeke reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to ensure a cleaner environment. He assured residents that the ten waste bins were just the first phase of the project, with more to be installed in due course. “This is just the beginning. We are committed to making Sapele one of the cleanest towns in Delta State,” he added.

The chairman, however, cautioned residents to adhere strictly to the new waste disposal directives. He warned that the local government would not tolerate indiscriminate dumping of refuse, urging the people to make proper use of the bins to maintain a healthy environment.

To ensure compliance, Hon. Abeke announced that defaulters would face strict penalties. He revealed that any resident caught violating the waste disposal rules would be fined fifty thousand naira (₦50,000) as a deterrent against environmental pollution.

The waste bins, strategically positioned across key areas in Sapele, are expected to significantly ease waste collection and disposal. The local government has also pledged to ensure regular evacuation of waste to prevent overflow and ensure the effectiveness of the initiative.

Residents have expressed optimism about the project, urging the local government to enforce the directives strictly. Many believe that with proper monitoring and enforcement, the initiative will go a long way in transforming the environmental outlook of Sapele and promoting public health.
