Sapele - It was a day of joy and celebration at the bustling Sapele Ultra Modern Market on Friday, December 22nd, 2023 as the Honourable Member Representing Sapele Constituency at the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon Perkins Umukoro, made a surprise visit to the market, distributing cash gifts to traders regardless of party affiliation in the spirit of Christmas.
Moving around the market for over three hours, our correspondent observed as Hon. Perkins Umukoro worked his way through the twisting alleys of the market, greeting merchants with handshakes and well-wishes while pressing envelopes with money into their hands. "Happy Christmas, & God bless," he told each recipient with a smile.
The usually bustling market fell silent in awe as traders stopped what they were doing to watch the lawmaker move from stall to stall. By the time he was done, over 300 petty traders had received a token to help with their yuletide expenses.
"I am here to put smiles on the faces of my people during this special time of the year," Hon Perkins Umukoro told Journalists "Whether you vote for my party or not, we are all one in this community and I want everyone to enjoy this Christmas." I decided to gift petty traders cash to enable them buy something themselves for the Christmas.
Ejiro, an okro seller danced as she received her Christmas largesse from the honourable member, calling the gesture "a blessing. "Miss Vera, an ice fish trader, said "God will continue to uplift him for remembering the less fortunate in a period like this."
The mood in the market was joyful as the traders sang and dance in excitement. This Christmas is sure to be memorable, however, for some, the celebration will be sweeter with the cash gift received.
"Things have been very hard with the high cost of goods," said Mama Ejime a garri trader, "This money will go a long way in helping me cook a nice meal for my family, and I want to appreciate Hon Umukoro for the kind gesture."

Shoppers also expressed appreciation to Hon. Umukoro's act. "It is good to see our leaders remembering the common people," said Fejiro Oyibo, a young lady who had come to purchase some fews goods item.
By afternoon, the market buzzed with discussion of the lawmaker's surprise visit. His act of goodwill seemed to have lifted the spirits of all who experienced it.

For Sapele's Central Market, it seems this Christmas will be remembered as one of generosity and togetherness - a small reminder of the reason for the season amid Nigeria's challenges. Hon Perkins Umukoro's kindness will not be forgotten so soon.
